Flag and Facts

Suriname's economy is higher than one of its neighbors Guyana but lower than Brazil. There are few major industries because only 20% of Suriname is not covered in dense rainforests. The major industries include mining, agriculture, and tourism which is small compared to the other major industries. Suriname's main exports are gold, crude oil, shrimp, rice, bananas, and timber. They need to import capital equipment (plumbing fixtures, electrical equipment, furniture, and tools) petroleum, food, cotton, and consumer products. Suriname’s GDP per capita in 2017 was $14,900  (not 2025 dollars). However, this has changed exponentially because in 2021 their inflation rate was 59.12% compared to the US in 2021 which was 4.7%.  The GDP per capita compared to its neighbor Brazil is relatively low. On the other hand, compared to Guyana the per capita GDP, is very high. In 2017 8.9% of people in Suriname lived in poverty in rural areas. The economy of Suriname relies on the mining of gold and crude oil and as a result, has no manufacturing industry.

The Suriname flag was made in 1975. It features four colors green white red and yellow each with a different meaning. The green of Suriname's flag represents the tropical rainforests that cover a huge amount of Suriname. The white of Suriname's flag represents freedom and justice. The red represents the growing spirit of a young country. And finally, the yellow star in the middle of the flag symbolizes the unity of the country.
