Suriname’s rainforest covers 90% of Suriname. The rainforest contains many exotic animals and plants including the blue poison dart frog, giant armadillos, and jaguars. There are many nature reserves in Suriname including Brownsberg Nature Park, where more than 1,450 plant and twenty-four animal species have been collected.

The rainforest Is divided into four main layers: the forest floor, the understory, the canopy, and the emergent layer. The forest floor contains decayed branches, fruit, and small ferns. It also has frogs, rats, and insects. The next layer, the understory is dark and humid and is home to young trees, vines, and bushes. Some animals that live in the understory are frogs, bats, geckos, and occasionally some predators like jaguars. Most animals in this layer have camouflage. The canopy layer is the main cover of the rainforest. The canopy layer acts like a roof and has abundant plant life and animals such as monkeys, birds, lizards, tree frogs, and other animals that are adapted to climbing. Finally the emergent layer hosts the tallest of trees and gets the most severe weather conditions. Some trees can reach up to 200 feet tall. The only animals in the emergent layer are birds, monkeys, and certain bats.
